Day 3: January 3, 2014

Thankfulness for My Cancer Cat

I am thankful for my cat. Her name is Hermione.

Did you know that I used to hate animals and pets? Especially cats. Like, I would consider NOT slowing down if one was in the road. And then after my first bout with cancer, my daughter, who never heard me say yes to getting a pet but kept asking anyway, asked me about a friend who needed to get rid of the runt in their litter because the other cats were picking on it. She asked me this after I got home from surgery to remove my tumor… after nearly dying before they realized I had cancer.

Cancer can cause you to change your mind about a lot of things. Especially when it comes to saying “no” to your kids.

So I said: “Get me more information, and I will think about it.” She was SHOCKED.

And I got the cat. Best thing I ever did. So many days and nights when I was by myself or feeling lonely because my kids couldn’t be with me during chemo… I had another living, breathing thing lying next to me.

I am so thankful for my cat. What a blessing to say: “Let me think about it” instead of “no”. And I’m looking at her right now. She is with me during my second round of blech.

Love, The Crazy Cat Lady
